Just a Snippet that goes nowhere

I just wanted a scene with the student council gossiping, and with Lelouch sporting a flower tucked behind his ear. I've been mostly just posting on AO3 lately, but I might bring things back to here, because it's easy for me to manage here.

Rivalz shuffled into the student council room and abruptly shut the door behind him in the most suspicious of manners, enough to pique Milly’s curiosity enough that she peered up at him from behind the textbook she was studying from, interested.

“I need to talk to you,” Rivalz said breathlessly, and hurried over to the table where she sat, waiting for the rest of the student council to arrive because she managed to get out of classes early that day. For a moment, Milly wondered if he was finally going to ask her out, and felt a little bad at the impending rejection she would have to deliver. But Rivalz didn’t look the type of nervous he normally did around her, and so Milly tabled that idea and cheerfully lowered the textbook to give him her attention.

“What is it, Rivalz?” Milly asked, fond but still with the distance she normally kept with most outside of those like Lelouch and Shirley, whom she liked to tease mercilessly.

Rivalz sat down in the chair next to her, although he dragged it along the floor so that he sat backwards with his arms resting over the back, and turned a nervous look toward the door before whispering, “Do you think Suzaku is… you know, gay?”

That was certainly a topic she hadn’t expected him to bring up, and Milly in blinked a moment in astonishment before smiling slyly, “Why? Did I miss something?”

He shrugged, and rubbed at the back of his head nervously, although Milly knew it had nothing to do with the sexuality of his fellow classmates. Rivalz despaired loudly and proudly over Milly’s long standing bet with several others on whom Lelouch would end up finally dating one day, boy or girl (she was so hoping it would be Shirley, if only because the poor girl was pining so badly), and had never felt the slightest bit repulsed at the idea of his best friend ending up with a guy.

“Well,” Milly said, feeling a little bad at putting him on the spot, “I’m pretty sure Suzaku’s got a big old crush on Princess Euphemia, the way he tends to wax poetic about her and blush. It’s cute, really. I should really be putting him on that spot for that more often.”

Especially with how shameless Suzaku normally was, her events and careful costumes not fazing him at all, unlike the others who whined and protested heartily while Milly laughed on.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought too,” Rivalz told her, and then gestured to the door, “and I didn’t want to say anything in front of Shirley in case I’m wrong about everything, and, well, I’m still working on talking to Nina about anything other than her interests, and…”

“What happened?” Milly asked, intrigued by the idea of a new piece of gossip. She smiled and leaned into his space, noting carefully how Rivalz himself turned a little pink around the ears at her proximity. “Tell me?”

“I just— err—” His eyes were wide and he glanced down just once before forcibly bringing his eyes back up to her face, and then looking away as he flushed, “So Suzaku and I went to get some of the parties supplies in town, right? Nothing unusual! And he stops at this bush to pick up some flower, and I thought that was nothing unusual as well? I mean, it was kinda pretty, and there’s nothing wrong with liking a flower or anything so I didn’t question it. I figured he thought it looked nice and he’d either give it to Princess Euphemia or put it in his room or something, brighten up the space a bit, he’s barely got anything in his dorm at all—”

“What did he do with it?” Milly asked, cutting through the rambling.

“He— we got back and ran across Lelouch and Kallen, and Suzaku just— tucked the flower behind Lelouch’s ear? Like, it was so casual no one really noticed until a second later! I didn’t notice and I was standing right next to Suzaku. Kallen didn’t notice and she was talking to Lelouch! I swear Lelouch didn’t notice either, since last I saw, he still has that flower!”

Milly felt a grin coming on, although she had to temper her glee a bit at the juicy bit of gossip first. “Well, they’re friends. It’s not that strange.”

I’m friends with them,” Rivalz declared, “and I’ve never given or received flowers like that? I mean, he held onto that flower for at least half an hour! It wasn’t some, ‘hey, saw this, and thought it’d look nice on you’, well… I guess it was, but not that thing where you turn in one direction, see it, and turn in the other direction, and connect flower to person in a thought? Gosh,” he scratched at his cheek, “am I making sense?”

“No, no, you are!” Milly encouraged him, starting her slow grin, “go on! Explain to me why it didn’t seem like a just friends sort of thing.”

“No one I know does this!” Rivalz said, encouraged by Milly’s enthusiasm. “I mean, friends, sure, sometimes you see something that reminds you of a person, and you get it for them. Someone likes a type of soda, or a candy, or I don’t know— you carry around a hair tie for a friend who always forgets hers? That’s a ‘good friend’ thing, well, a really good friend thing, maybe, but flowers seem a little…” he made a vague gesture with his hands, as if unable to either gesticulate or vocalize his point coherently, “...romantic, maybe? I mean, I wouldn’t see a flower and think of getting it for someone unless it, err. Unless you like like someone, right?”

“Maybe it’s different with different people,” Milly said, although her tone was far too gleeful by now to believe in her own words. She grinned at Rivalz, who looked a bit intimidated by the sheer amount of teeth for a moment, but seemed to be bolstered by her positivity a second later. “But you’re more of an export on how boys feel than I am, I suppose, so I’ll have to take you on your word—”

“Oh,” Rivalz said, and then pulled back a little, sheepish, “you’re not going to bring this up to either Lelouch or Suzaku, are you?”

“No, no,” Milly reassured him, because she was going to do way more than that. Plan a new festival, perhaps, or set the two of them up, but she wouldn’t do something as simple as talk to them about this, when she could do things that were so much more interesting—

The door the of the student council room slammed open with a loud bang that made both her and Rivalz jump slightly in their seats, and they looked over to see Shirley, wide eyed and and panting from what looked like running a great distance just to get to them, an arm still up from where she shoved the door against the wall.

Milly,” the redhead shrieked, cheeks flushed and eyes a little too bright, “Lulu has! He has— a flower in his hair? And it wasn’t Nunnally’s doing!”

“Are you asking me who gave it to him or are you here to talk about Lelouch with flowers?” Milly asked cheerily and far more calmly than Shirley, who finally covered her face with her hands to make whining noises even as Milly patted the chair next to hers, ignoring Rivalz and his nervous laughter.

“Come in, come in,” Milly cooed to her soothingly as Shirley shuffled her way slowly into the room, “and close the door behind you! We should have a few minutes yet before the others start to show up, and you can tell me all about it, alright?”

In the end, Shirley did manage to close the door behind her, although she didn’t exactly get coherent words out as she made her way over to Milly and made dying whale noises at her while Milly cooed at her and hugged her, and Rivalz tried very hard not to repeat everything he just told Milly to Shirley, who probably wouldn’t want the potential (if it was even that) love rival in her life.

Some days, Milly thought, she really felt like she was at the center of a television drama, and she couldn’t imagine a better way to spend her high school years.

Minutes later when the rest of the student council slowly trickled in and Shirley finally regained her composure again, although her cheeks were still a bit pink, Milly crooned out a low, “Oh, Lelouch~” as her vice president walked in with a bright purple blossom tucked behind his ear and in step with Suzaku.

He took one look at her grin, Rivalz’s embarrassment, and Shirley’s red face, and just turned around and walked right back out the door to the sound of Milly’s loud laughter.
