Alphonse was not afraid when he first performed soul alchemy. It wasn’t so much that he was overconfident, because unlike Edward, Al covered all possibilities of his experiment going wrong.
It was dangerous- who had ever tried to cut off a part of their soul and store it elsewhere before? How would Alphonse know it if worked, or call his soul back?
Yet as a part of his soul felt the cold emptiness that was the suit of armour, and saw himself from the hollow sockets for eyes, Alphonse felt... closer to home than he had in a long time.
