Ficlet coming through!
Okay, this journal's probably going to be swarmed with ficlets and drabbles soon. ^^;; I'm taking requests from friends over at
tsukishirou to help me write, since I've been dry on inspiration for way too long. Here's the first of the swarm, though!

Title: Boys and Girls
Fandom: Furuba (Fruits Basket)
Pairing: Hiro/Risa
Rating: PG (for swearing)
Word count: 1,195
Request for: fluff! (Probably takes place before the series starts.)
Hiro's classmates, being that he attended an all boys' school, were duly convinced that all girls had cooties. If not cooties (for those of them mature enough to realize that, no, girls did not have some sort of inherent disease because their mothers were kind and beautiful and disease-free- although they might not have said the same for their sisters...), then girls were just too different and weird to hang around with.
And Hiro's classmates also thought that anyone meek and quiet had to be inferior, if only because that meant that sort of person wasn't strong enough to speak out and express their own opinions. That's why Hiro's a Very Respected Boy in his school: he wasn't afraid to speak out against anyone, even if it meant that he would get into a lot of trouble.
In fact, Hiro got into all sorts of trouble with the authorities at his school because he wouldn't stop swearing, and disrespecting his elders. His teachers whispered about him being a violent child who would most likely grow into an extremely violent teenager. But that didn't stop his classmates from idolizing him.
Sohma Hiro, after all, was from a prestigious family and had a background of getting away with just about anything. His words were interlaced with swearing and he took advantage of those who were too weak to speak up against him. He didn't care about whether they were older than him or not- Hiro wasn't the type who would stand for weaknesses.
Well... there was one exception to that statement.
Which was why he was at a school miles away from his own, away from his own support group of children who would cheer him on and rally after him in a conflict. It was why he was currently snarling at a group of kids who were older than him, bigger than him, and outnumbered him greatly.
All because of a meek, quiet girl whom was at the moment shoved behind him.
Hiro growled, his lower lip bloodied and his left eye already starting to swell. He was sporting the beginning of several bruises on his fists, and blood on his legs from several scrapes at his knees. But his stance was determined, and he was lucky that several of his opponents had already had enough.
"You have no right to interfere with matters in our school." One of the children was protesting, glaring as he gripped his right shoulder tightly- the one that Hiro had managed aim a perfectly good kick at. "And you can't claim to be protecting her when we weren't attacking her!"
Perhaps it was true that the group of children hadn't been attacking the girl when Hiro had gotten there. But all he had seen was the golden haired girl crouched down in the group, her hands covering her ears and her eyes squeezed shut as those children laughed above her. It had been enough to send him into one of his boiling rages.
"Fuck you," Hiro spat out viciously. "You should feel lucky that you hadn't laid a hand on her, or I'd have your fucking pelts. I can still report you for bullying with what I saw."
The girl behind him shrunk into herself slightly at his furious tone, and Hiro berated himself for it. It certainly wouldn't do for him to scare her as well.
The other children sneered at him, some snarling with anger as well.
"The next person to come at me," Hiro continued, his tone still sharp but lacking the earlier viciousness that had startled the girl, "Will have his arm broken." He tensed his stance, ready to make promise of that threat.
This seemed to waken the other children into how Hiro was now taking the fight seriously, whereas before had been just a tumble with the usual bruises and cuts. Most of the children glanced at each other out of the corner of their eyes, nervousness starting to show. They had all already sustained injuries that would raise questions from their parents- but to come home with a serious injury? It would be too hard to explain that… too much hassle to prevent their families from finding who they were fighting with.
Hiro was ready to smirk with victory when he felt the tug at the back of his shirt. He glanced behind himself at the golden haired girl whom had grabbed a fistful of his t-shirt.
“Hiro,” she whispered. “Please stop. Let’s just go home.”
He balked. “But… I… they were bullying you! They deserve more than just bruises!”
She shook her head vehemently, her gold eyes downcast as she stated more forcefully, “Let’s go home.”
Hiro continued to gape at her for a few moments, before turning to glare at the other children, making sure that they knew the only reason they got off easily was because of her, because she wished it. And if he ever found them bullying her again, the consequences would be severe.
The blonde boy allowed the girl to tug him away from the fight after he was sure that he had gotten the message across. Those damned brats deserve to be taken down a notch or two, which was for sure… he should have broken their faces in when-
“Are you mad at me?”
The voice was small and soft, and Hiro blinked when he realized that they had stopped walking, and that she was standing in front of him, her eyes soft but not scared as she had been before. The question made Hiro want to deny an ability to ever be mad at her, to protest what she had said, to scratch the back of his head in embarrassment and try to change the subject.
Instead, Hiro took her hand cautiously, uncertain whether she would break away or relax. They had stopped at a small intersection in a residential area, and there was no one around to witness Hiro's moment of weakness. He might have been strong about everything else- but when it came to Sohma Risa, Hiro's confidence melted into uncertainty.
"I'm not mad." He stated, his words clear of his usual tactlessness. His eyes were on their entwined fingers, and he braced himself for the moment when she would pull away from him. Because children their age never held hands. Because they were cousins, albeit very distant ones. "I just don't like to see you upset."
When she didn't pull away, Hiro looked up to see Risa smile beautifully at him, her golden eyes lit up with a soft joy that made his breath hitch. She tightened her hold on his hands, pulling him along again, and Hiro followed because he could do nothing else.
"But I never stay upset when Hiro's here with me."
It was then and there, staring at her smiling face and feeling her hand within his, that Hiro decided his classmates had to be very stupid. Here was a girl that definitely didn’t have cooties, and wasn't weird at all. All the other boys were just too stupid and foolish to realize it.
But even if she were weird... she was Hiro's one exception to everything.
