HP ficlet: Pause

Another fic that I wrote over a month ago. ^_^;; I'm sure back then the challenge had been 'pause', and I scribbled out a drabble without even typing it up. But I figured since I've been so short on HP fics lately, I might has well put this one out!

Title: Pause
Fandom: Harry Potter
Word count: 703
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Rating: PG
For the [livejournal.com profile] 15minuteficlets challenge.
Summary: Sometimes a lingering touch and just the hesitation to make a decision can make all the difference in the world.

It started with a lingering touch.

A single hesitation that brought the feeling of skin on skin together and the pause that followed in its footsteps. It was unwanted, it was unnecessary, and it was oh so craved.

It started in a random meeting in a random hallway, with some random fight about a random subject. They were always fighting back then. They still fought daily even after the events that passed. It was nothing special, really, the fighting and their first understanding of each other.

But that random name-calling had sparked another random fight between Slytherin and Gryffindor. Back then the tensions had been so high strung around those two houses that a student could have cut their air with their wand.

It was an accidental brush of lips, really, something that could have happened to anyone. It was just frustrating that something like that happened in between Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter. Everyone saw it. Everyone stopped.

There was a great pause.

And for some reason, the brush of lips seemed to last longer than ordinary, as if both hesitated from pulling away. It was a moment that seemed to slow because everyone was watching, because they had both stopped their own fighting as well and had stared at each other in- shock? Fear? Disgust?

After that pause was over, the two boys had pulled away from each other immediately, and the moment had been broken. Ron rushed to help Harry up, glaring and spitting curses at the blonde Slytherin the entire time, saying that Draco had tried to contaminate his best friend and that Slytherins were so sick and disgusting to use a kiss to break a fight when they knew they were losing.

Draco was helped up by Blaise and Pansy, who had neglected to comment on the horrible things that Ron had said, instead choosing to glare fiercely at the redhead and bite their tongues from screaming threats. They were Slytherins, and Slytherins did not give in to impulses to get in trouble like Gryffindors did, no matter how many fights they had provoked in the past.

And nothing had happened for the next few weeks, because both sides had kept to themselves, glaring at each other in between classes and trying to ignore each others' existence in class.

Both Harry and Draco had been well guarded by their friends, to prevent more fighting. The rumors of the last skirmish had spread like wildfire around school, and both boys had been adamantly tight-lipped on the subject.

The entire school thought they were disgusted by each other.

It was almost an entire month later before the dark-haired Gryffindor and the blonde Slytherin were able to bump into each other in the hallway again, this time in private because they were both sick of people following them around.

They had run smack into each other from different corners, and Draco had fallen to the ground while Harry dropped all his books and parchments. For some odd reason, the Slytherin had gotten up without comment, and helped Harry pick up his notes off the ground.

Harry paused, not knowing why Draco was being so nice.

When both boys had done picking up the papers, Harry held out a hand to help Draco up, and hesitated when he felt the contact of Draco's hand in his.

"Why did you linger?" He asked, knowing that Draco would understand what he was talking about. The incident might have taken place a month ago, but neither boy had been allowed to forget it with the way that the entire school was acting.

Draco grasped onto Harry's hand, and allowed the other boy to pull him up; steadying himself and his book bag once he was able to stand on his own. He didn't let go of Harry's hand, however, and only blinked at the question.

Another pause- this time with the two staring at each other, both with questioning gazes.

And Draco's hand lingered on Harry's, and they both wondered why they weren't mad at each other for accidentally kissing when they got so mad at each other for all the little things.

"I guess," Draco finally replied. "That it's the same reason you did."
